Have you ever asked for your picture to be taken, only to receive it back and criticize yourself? Here is how I have been able to work around it.

It was my idea to capture this beautiful moment, you see in the photo above, how could I not? It was curated so elegantly. The old rustic bathtub surrounded by trees accompanied by Dr. Bronner’s soap and overlooking a mystical pond, it’s absolutely breathtaking.

I got out of town this past weekend and received much more than a weekend away from the New York energy. I enjoyed seeing Fall leaves starting to turn from green to red, I went apple picking, I enjoyed beautiful conversations, and reground myself with less technology buzzing.

Nature has always been there for me when I need to be brought back down to earth and this to look at the photos of myself gazing over the pond and instead of soaking in the beauty that was captured, I criticized myself.

We all know that women critique themselves against the most impossible standards and the result can be quite reckless, to say the least. Body image is a subjective picture of what our body looks like and it quite literally weighs on us at every waking moment.

But, to define who we are by our physical appearance is a hollow life to live and is no life to live at all. Instead of falling into the rabbit hole of negative self-talk, I wanted to share with you a little mental exercise that works for me to reframe negative thoughts.

When the thought comes up:

  1. Tune in. Listen to what your thoughts are.

2. Turn the phrase into a question. Try giving your narrator a funny voice to help you start to not take the thought so seriously.

3. Name one thing you are happy about that you accomplished this year. Okay, so this has nothing to do with the original negative thought, but it is going to tap into your happy hormones, changing your thought pattern. (despite the year covid brought us within itself, you did at least one thing you’re proud of, think of that.)

Rewiring thoughts take hard work, consistency, and time. Our body supports us with energy, abundance, love, comfort, it presents us a home to live in no matter where we travel in the world. Mindset is powerful and we have the power to rewire our thoughts to bring us grounding within ourselves.

Next time, try reframing your thoughts with these tips and stay out of the negative thought trap.
